It Was A Tough Time for Swiss Movement Makers

Mechanical watches continued to grow in demand for the next couple of years after the 7750 was introduced but then sales began to fall away dramatically. Those of us old to remember will remember the mid-1970's when the replica Patek Philippe watches industry was being turned on its head with the sensation that was the Japanese quartz movement, including chronograph quartz movements. Quartz movements were cheaper to produce and it was much easier to make watches that could more precisely keep time. Swiss watch makers were finding it difficult to sell enough mechanical watches and many were switching away from mechanical movements like the 7750 to quartz movements. This of course was bad news for Valjoux and their 7750 movement but to their credit, the replica watches stayed the course and didn't produce a quartz movement to try to compete.

It was a tough time for Swiss movement makers and between 1979 and 1982 many were sold and became part of what is now ETA. Valjoux toughed it out for a number of years before the market for Swiss mechanical watches started to recover in the mid 1980's and in 1983, Valjoux started to produce the 7750 again. By 2008, even though ETA were manufacturing 200,000 variants of the 7750 a year for a range of Swiss luxury watch makers, demand still outstripped supply.

The Swiss Competition Commission held a two year investigation into ETA's practices and in late 2005 announced that ETA was abusing their dominant market position. ETA argued that they were overwhelmed with orders for their ebauches (movement blanks) but actually wanted watch manufacturers to produce their own watch movements so that movements would continue to evolve and ensure their survival.
